The UCSD Triathlon Team held a practice time trial in preparation for the fast-approaching collegiate season. The course consisted of three laps around Fiesta Island in the middle of Mission Bay. With less than 30 feet of climbing per lap and no stop signs, it is a fast course and a favorite training ground for local velo-philes. It is also the site of the famous Fiesta Island Time Trial Series and the UCSD Tritonman Triathlon.
Dense morning fog gave way to clear skies and calm conditions. Riders lined up and were sent off in 30 second intervals. Feared by both cyclists and triathletes alike, the time trial pits the mind and body against one another in a grueling battle of pain and agony. After the dust had cleared and the wheels stopped turning, everyone crowded around for the results. The fastest ride of the day belonged to Assistant Coach Chris Burnham, with a time of 29:01 and an average speed of 25.4mph over the 12.3 mile course. Close behind him were Marc Schommer, Ryon Graf and Frank Uyeda, who all finished within 45 seconds of the leader. The fastest Womens’ time belonged to Darlene Hunt, with 33:38.
Overall, an impressive showing with almost everyone posting a faster time than exactly one year ago on the same course. Anticipate a strong and rewarding 2009 season for Triton Triathlon.
